What Candidate Donations Continue To Tell Us

By Matthew Gagnon
February 19, 2010

Last October, I broke some news about candidate political giving.  We saw who gave little, who gave much and who people gave to.  This caused some trouble for Les Otten, who I pointed out gave money to multiple Democrats, and even two sides of the same race, and exposed the habits of the other candidates as well.

Later on, I have dug a little deeper into donations, and uncovered a donation by Bruce Poliquin to what is now the Brady Campaign – something that caused him a severe headache as well.

But up until now, I had only covered candidates who were declared at the time, and had not taken a comprehensive look.

Since that original article, we have seen the entry of Steve Abbott and Bill Beardsley in the race, and it is time we take a gander at what they have done with their money over the years as well.  You may notice a few additional donations on the candidates I covered previously – that is nothing more than me uncovering a few more.

I present the donations themselves with no analysis for you to judge on your own.  Candidates are in alphabetical order.

It’s worth nothing that even though Otten gave money to CasinosNo!, in the debate he said he’d support casinos expansion. Which is it, Les?

I’ve got a bit on that and Otten’s response to the issue at the Augusta Insider.

    Here’s a piece:

Les does support casinos in Maine as long as the enabling legislation is well written, the laws and regulations are vetted and understood, as long as the casino is managed by a Maine Company and the monies stay in the state, and as long as the casino is not just a ‘stand alone’ – it must be part of a larger resort destination to boost tourism in Maine.

Excuse me Les, Chellie Pingree? Mike Michaud? Joe Biden? Which party are you supporting? Or are you possibly supporting your own agenda?

This is EXACTLY what bothers me about Otten. In order to get ANYTHING done in an environmentally controlled business such as a Golf Course or Ski Area you have to be way under the covers in bed with politicians (usually EPA friendly democrats) in order to get around the red tape involved in cutting through wetlands, etc. in order to accomplish what you want. Is Otten running to fix the state or rub the backs of those that can help when his 4 years are up?

I am thinking he wants to rub backs. He has failed enough that he needs to find a “new” approach.

Donations to Joe Biden are inexcusable for any Republican.
