Maine Rejects Same Sex Marriage: Yes On One Wins
Pine Tree Politics is prepared to call question one. With 75% of the vote counted, the Yes on One campaign has widened its lead to nearly 20,000 votes.
The voter rich ares of Portland, Bangor, Augusta, and other large cities have either already been counted, or the remaining votes in those cities would not be anywhere near enough to throw the race back in the other direction. Portland, Maine’s most populous city with more than 60,000 residents, has broken roughly 70-30 in favor of rejecting the veto, but most of its votes have been counted, and even if they hadn’t been, it alone couldn’t come anywhere near turning it, given the split.
So at this point, the race is over. It may narrow slightly, but at this point it doesn’t even look like it is headed to a recount.
Once again, when same-sex marriage has been put to a vote of the people – even in the blue northeast – it has been rejected.
